Fay, Soap, Loves Me, Loves Me Not, Benson, It Takes Two, The Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Nurses, Good & Evil, The Golden Palace, and The Secret Lives of Men are just a few of the television programmes that Harris has produced. She also wrote or co-authored all of the episodes of Soap and starred on two episodes of the programme as Babette, a hooker.
She has also written or co-written a number of other shows. Her most popular television programme was The Golden Girls, which was also her most successful. On September 18, 1983, Harris tied the knot with television producer Paul Junger Witt, who worked with her on all of the programmes she developed. She was married to actor Berkeley Harris from 1965 until 1969, with whom she had a son, the writer Sam Harris, who was born in 196The screenplay for Then Came Bronson was the very first one Harris sold. Later, she wrote for shows such as Love, American Style, All in the Family, The Partridge Family, and the television version of Neil Simon’s novel Barefoot in the Park, among other projects.
Harris received the Humanitas Prize for her abortion episode for the Bea Arthur-starring television sitcom Maude, which aired in the 1970s. She would subsequently collaborate with Arthur once again in the 1980s, when Arthur starred as one of the main characters in the television series The Golden Girls. Harris suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, which made it difficult for her to take part in the creation of The Golden Girls, which she did.
As part of the plot for Arthur’s character Dorothy, who was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome in an episode of that programme titled “Sick and Tired” (1989), Harris included some of her own personal problems. In collaboration with Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas, Harris founded the production firm Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions. In 2005, she received the Paddy Chayefsky Award from the Writers’ Guild of America, and in 2011, she was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
